BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

TikTok is a global social media sensation that has taken the world by storm - me included. Launched in 2016, this platform has quickly become a creative playground for millions of users, spanning generations and cultures. Its short-form video format, that ranges from a few seconds to 10 minutes, has redefined the way we share our lives, talents and stories. It's a place where trends are born, where creativity knows no bounds, and where laughter, inspiration, and connection thrive in every scroll. TikTok has truly become a digital canvas for the world to share, explore, and connect like never before.

Once TikTok is opened you are presented with a For You Page (FYP), this is a series of videos or photos curated to your personalised interests, based on topics you search, content you interact with and also what is shared with you. As an addicted user of Tiktok, there is a feature clearly missing which ultimately disrupts my user experience as a whole. The missing function in question is the ability to share and interact with content via multiple people.

On TikTok you are only able to share content with users individually. The absence of this missing function hinders the diversity of my FYP, overall collaboration across the app, community building and real-time interaction. I chose to explore this issue by designing a feature that combats this issue.

The Problem

Tiktok does not have a feature where users can interact within a group which is a valuable component of a social media platform.

When users want to interact with more than one person they turn to third party social media platforms in order to share content which diminishes the overall user experience on TikTok.

The Task

How might we introduce a feature that increases overall interaction between users?

Given the existence of a messaging system designed for one-on-one interactions, users would significantly enhance their experience with the inclusion of an integrated multi-chat feature.

competitive analysis

To understand the solutions available to users, I conducted a comprehensive competitive analysis encompassing TikTok's direct and indirect rivals. My approach involved a diverse selection of social media platforms, including X (previously known as Twitter), Snapchat, and Instagram. This analysis served as a valuable benchmark, shedding light on how various platforms and services have addressed the same challenges. By dissecting the features employed by these competitors for group content sharing, I aimed to ensure the development of the most effective and user-friendly group interaction feature.

FINDINGS

After researching multi-chat features offered by TikTok's rivals, I've concluded that seven functionalities are key to creating an effective experience within the app. This in-depth analysis allowed me to understand the strengths and weaknesses of existing multi-chat platforms, and how TikTok can integrate features that compliment its existing user base and content focus. One feature I won't be including is "Voice + Video Calls". Established platforms already dominate this space, offering high-quality video conferencing functionalities. TikTok's focus should remain on its unique strengths, fostering a dynamic and creative space for users to connect through engaging content and innovative features tailored to its core audience.

I conducted remote user interviews with 5 participants who utilise various social platforms. This approach aimed to provide deeper insights into their motivations for using social media, the challenges they encounter, and their perspectives on what constitutes effective social engagement. Participants included a range of ethnicities, incomes, locations, and genders to ensure a greater range of data and to avoid bias.

empathy mapping

I created an empathy map in order to synthesise my findings. This type of research synthesis was used in order to gain a holistic understanding of the user's experience, encompassing their thoughts, emotions, actions, and even what they verbalise. This comprehensive picture would then allow me to identify common themes and pain points, ultimately guiding me towards designing solutions that truly resonate with our user base.

The overall analysis from the competitive research and user interviews enabled me to pinpoint the distinct user requirements that would be necessary in order to provide the best possible additional feature to TikTok. Given the proposal to introduce a new feature into an already established product, a thorough evaluation of its business viability was imperative. I meticulously outlined TikTok's business objectives and challenges, aligning them with the user goals and needs gleaned from the interviews. This process was instrumental in identifying potential areas of convergence, contributing significantly to the overarching vision for the final product.

Guided by the insights from the research phase, the solution quickly began to take the form of a group chat feature which would be embedded into the already existing message system TikTok has. While the overall concept took shape, finer points needed attention, such as the user's access to the feature within the existing app and the specific navigation cues it would integrate. To document these details, I developed user flows outlining the path users would follow from the existing app to the feature. These flows considered various scenarios and decision points to guide users in achieving their goals.

Initially, I built simple prototypes with mid-fidelity wireframes in Figma, focusing on four key user flows: Group Creation, Acceptance Into A Groupchat, Creating A Groupchat Through The FYP and Introducing Rooms. Usability testing was later conducted in order to gather whether the flows were in fact doable and if the integration was infact seamless. Below are 2 selected findings and the design iterations they inspired.

To easily find a user’s message requests, two new buttons will be introduced to differentiate between the two and be pinned, rather than being embedded within existing messages.

After my initial usability testing, I used my design iterations to modify my sketches and quickly got started on crafting their high-fidelity wireframes. Since I was integrating a group chat feature into TikTok’s existing messaging system, it was crucial to consult TikTok's brand guidelines. This ensured my designs adhered to their standardised design system and maintained consistency. My objective was to seamlessly integrate the new feature, making it complementary to the existing app design.

conclusion

conclusion

In conclusion, the addition of a group chat and "Rooms" feature on TikTok was designed to strengthen in-app community building and minimise the reliance on third-party apps for content sharing. This feature allows users to connect with friends and like-minded individuals, fostering a deeper sense of belonging and engagement on the platform. By enabling users to create group conversations and join interest-based "Rooms," this feature aligns with TikTok’s vision of building authentic, interactive communities, enhancing the user experience, and creating more opportunities for content sharing and interaction directly within the app.

The next steps involve gathering comprehensive user feedback through usability testing to assess how effectively the chat and "Rooms" features meet user needs and enhance engagement. Based on this feedback, refining the interface for ease of navigation, moderation tools for community safety, and additional customisation options could further improve the user experience. Following testing and optimisation, a potential rollout of a content discovery feature within “Rooms” could also add value, allowing users to explore trending topics and join conversations on topics they’re passionate about.
